ONRA - MY COMET / SHHHHHHH (2008)

Onra is one of the most interesting producers nowadays, i've already written about his Chinoiseries LP and A 7" from his and Quetzals - Tribute project.

This 7" is in a serie of 7 records from the great irish All City Label. All records in the serie are worth a purchase the next time you buy records. This is beats of the more experimental side of hiphop and I always like progression in beat makin, so this is kind of uplifting to hear!

The two tracks on this record is the opposite of each other. The beat called "My Comet" ia an easy listened beat with similarities in some of Flying Lotus work. The B-side is the more hard melted "Shhhhhhh".

Both tracks are genious in their own way though, and Onra shows who's the king of France again!

SHAFIQ PRESENTS JANK RANDOM VS EARL LEONNE - THE FREQUENCY CLASH (2008)

I really love Beats, as you probably already noticed if you've been
reading some posts in this blog.

This LP is in the same league as other artists on poo-bah records, like Take, Ras G and Ta' raach.

By this i mean the characteristic atmospheric sound of theese artists. It's fresh!

The LP is made by Shafiq Husayn from the always interesting Sa-Ra collective, and i'm really
looking forward to more of his solo projects.

Peace!

CIRCLE RESEARCH - WHO? (2008)

Circle Research is a Toronto based beat making duo. They released an interesting 12" earlier this year called "The Who EP, with some tracks from this album released a couple of weeks ago. Most of the tracks are about one minuite long, in other words, this album is more for listening than using in your next mixtape.

Circle Research uses many of the classic hiphop breaks and samples on the album, but they put them in a new perspective and create a hybrid between the classix and the hip hop sound we're looking for in 2008.

The album is released on the german label "Melting Pot", which is a very interesting label for those who haven't checked them out yet.

At the end I have to add some credits to the man behind the artwork of this record, it's fuckin brutal..

Below, some of my favourite tracks from the record.

MURS - MURS FOR PRESIDENT (2008)

Murs new full length! Likely to be one of the best full lengt albums from US artist this year, along with some other releases. Funny surprise is the coloured vinyl, I didn't expect that when I opened the sleeve. After one listening, the best tracks is the same as the 12" below, but I think this is the the kind of record that grows when you've listened to it some time. As it is most of the time with good records.

You can listen to two tracks from the record below.

MURS - CAN IT BE/ME AND THIS JAWN (2008)

I really like Murs. This 12" is no exception!

Solid catchy Jackson 5 sample. Probably there's a hit warning on this one. Hit warnings is of course always bad, so let's hope it wont make it to far on the charts. Then I can be proud of this record next year too.

The B-side, "Me And This Jawn", has one of the best beats lately. But the song doesn't really stick to my brain, I don't know why. I have a bad feeling about "New Murs".

Maybe because he's now released by warner music....

DJ PREMIER - BEATS THAT COLLECTED DUST (2008)

Dj Premier doesn't disappoint us this time either. This LP is packed with beats that most producers would have given their right hand for coming up with. Premo though, admit in the inlay that he's not very fond of theese beats, and they aren't his best. I agree with him, this material isn't sparkling as much as some of his other released stuff. But still, premo keeps it so geniously simple so you just got to love this. Especially on a dusky swedish monday like this. Big up once again premo!

My favourite tracks on the record is "Blow Horn Joint" and "B-Line".

J RAWLS - DIGITAL FUNKY/ANOTHER TRIBUTE TO DILLA 7" (2008)

An almost new 7" by J Rawls, from his forthcoming album "Liquid Crystal Project pt. 2". Can't wait!

This records contains one funky side and one jazzed down side with lower bpm. Very good record, unfortunately my digital funky side have some wierd sounds that i think is mistakes in the pressing, too bad, but that's the price you pay when you buy vinyl theese days.

Support J Rawls, you know you'll like it!

TRAINSPOTTERS - REWIND & KAP EP (2008)

BACK!

It's been a long holiday for us at MVWAT. But now we're back in the virtual crates again.

This release is the perfect kick off for the blog. Our swedish favourites Trainspotters has done it again, and released a new EP on white (!) wax. I'm always happy when swedish wax is released and it thrills me even more when it's a coloured vinyl and four tight tracks...

This EP is high quality all through but my personal favourites is the older track "Growing up" and the new "That's how" produced by a new swedish producer called "Thosedamnacademics".

Another great track "Bullshit rap" which contains representants for more or less the whole swedish (english speaking) rap scene. Nice to hear something from Kashal-Tee and Prop Dylan, it's been a while since!

Buy it!

You can hear all tracks from the EP at their myspace.

ONRA & QUETZAL - PRESENT TRIBUTE EP 2 (2008)

This 7" by Onra, released recently by french "Favorite Records" is for you who likes soul!

Onra & Quetzal have been working with a cd that's a tribute to the soul sound of the seventies. On this second 7" from the project they squeeze in four tracks. All tracks are worth the price of the record alone, so I can really recommend you to put your hand on this record as soon as possible.

First I thought this was a tribute to Dilla or something because they uses kind of a similar technique in chopping up samples as dilla did in the end of his life. Not biting though, this record has its own sound.

For you who like to buy cd's, get the full lenght album! (For us who don't there are two 7" waiting for our crates from the project)

J-LIVE - THE UPGRADE/THE UNDERSTANDING (2008)

Top 5 12" and songs this year and J-LIVE does it again! How I love the sound of "The Understanding". Simple beat created with some mellow keys and a soft drumline. Really good.

The Upgrade is produced by one of my american favourite producers nowadays, Oddisee. Sample based beat with some horns straight from the crate. And J-Live, as usual he kicks it real tight over theese two masterpiece beats.

If, you haven't got it yet, get it, don't download it. This shit belongs on wax and the artists needs your support.

PETE ROCK - THE INSTRUMENTALS PART TWO (2002)

Our ambition was to write about both new and old records, it's been more new records then old though. This isn't one of the real old school classics but maybe a "soon to be classic" record. Released over six years ago in 2002, a year that didn't put two many stars on the hip hop heaven, and still top notch compared to what's released today.

What I love with this, and similar records, with Pete Rock and other guys that's been around for a while is the way they let their beats stay geniously simple. They use as few channels as possible and create the raw sound, significant for a good hiphop record that will last forever. According to me, too much of todays hiphop is too slick and miss the whole point with keeping it raw. As few computers as possible make a better record.

Records like this remains good because of the simpleness, it's like good women and fine wine that's only get better over the years. Sorry, but it's as cheesy as that.

Nuff with the sentimental b'shit anyway, this is a fuckin good record. Don't hesitate to put it in your crate if you run over it as i did today during some after work diggin'.

SPECIFICS - MY TUNES 12" (2007)

Iv'e hade some trouble with the mail lately, that's the main reason for not beeing active on this blog. About a month ago I ordered a big bunch of records from UK, as I always do, but after a few weeks I realised that they wouldn't show up. My records were probably stolen on someone on the post terminals.

I can't stand to think about some fat guy wearing my "jazzy sport" t-shirt and drewling over my records that he'd never appreciate as much as I would. People like that go straight to hell, together with the guys that invented Serato!

This is why I'm going write about an older 12" tday, although the sound is still fresh. The group is "The Specifics" and they released this record in 2007 on the Japaneese label P-vine. The record is as I like it, soulful, jazzy and great to sip on your chilled Hoegaarden to. The beats is the work of a very talented producer called "Think Twice" and the lyrics by an Mc called "Golden Boy". The lyrics is OK but they weren't the main reason for putting my money on this little piece of plastic. For me its always been, and always will be, for the beats.

Beats are forever!

STEVE SPACEK - LET THE DOLLAR CIRCULATE (2005)

I have a bunch of new records that I want to get deeper into and maybe write some lines on this blog about. But, when I woke up this morning with a semi-hangover from yesterdays hockeygame I just felt to put this record on and drink my morning coffee in peace. This is one of those records you'll never regret that you bought.

It's just so clever, the dirty sound of the Dilla prod. and Steve's voice touching the beat in such a sensitive way. With a voice like he was smoking a package of Lucky Strike before he was entering the studio that morning.

Unfortunately spacek did'nt reach the same level with his later stuff, but they're OK so check it out if you have'nt.

I doubt that someone interested in this blog dont know the song but I put a link to a sound sample anyway, so you can remember how it was, back in 2005.

MOMENTAN - DIE STADTKINDER VOM LANDEI (2007)

The German people! Don't they have some things in common with the people from Japan? At least when it comes to vinyl and hiphop and maybe some other stuff, not suitable to mention here, hehe. If you ask me, Germany is (together with France), europe's metropol of hiphop as much as Japan is in asia.

So, what we have here may be the best of both worlds, this record from a group called "Momentan" based in Cologne in southern germany and released on Goon trax from Japan! I dont really understand the language except in the song "Dare" where Rakaa from Dilated Peoples drop some bars. But it's a worthy pick up anyway, worth every £!

The beats though, is fantastic, made by the german producer "The Saint" who seems to have alot going on theese days. I can highly recommend you to check some more of his work out if you like this. Pure soulful beats!

Listen also to the track "Going Back" on their myspace, it's sooo good!

PAT D & LADY PARADOX - STEP OFF/TICK OF TIME (2008)

British rap, how can't you love it? Correct me if i'm wrong but I think this is the first female MC havin' a record posted on this blog. And she deserves all attention she can get, not because she's a girl, but because she's an uplifting wave with fresh topics on the dead toxic sea, called hiphop 2008.

The beats, the beats! Made by a producer called "Pat D", who's also from the island in the west. Great soulfull sound. It gives me that old feeling back, you know before serato, ipods and other things from hell. I really recommend you to give the label, "A bridge too far", a virtual visit and listen to the tracks under "music".

The record is released on the classic japaneese label "P-vine", just like we thought.

If you like this you should check out their full lenght album called; Kind of Peace!

Long time no blog, but new records! Here is a new release on the japaneese label Subcontact, that I want you to take a closer look at. Rip one has release two EP's containing most of the songs from his full lengt album "Epitome" wich, during to wikipedia, means a later author reproducing older material that's gone lost over the years. The title is a statement.

The sound is jazzy, with some salsa and breakbeat influences on some tracks, Rip has also got some help from some eccelent Mc's. They are new to me, and i will keep an ear on their work in the future!

THE DONUTS - ALL SAMPLES CLEARED EP (2007)

Ouch! This is so hot. Imagine Dilla the last months of his life, lyin down in his hospital bed sampling theese real classics that y'all recognize from "Donuts". That's deep man, that's deep.

Of course the right way to do it is to dig yourself each record appearing on this EP but because of my lazyness, my fetisch for whitelabels and my opinion that every fresh vinyl record from the pressing plant is a good record. And the fact that this record contains the ground to what (with some help from Dilla) was one of the best records 2006 makes it a worthy pick-up next time you buy records.

My personal favourite is of course every song on the record, Dilla's got the taste, but "Undisputed truth - walk on by" and "Jerry Butler - Just because I really love you", is the most played around here at the time.

The record is released on "Nuts", A japaneese lable that's not known for anything yet.

THE 49ERS - BREATH OF FRESH AIR (2007)

Yes! An (almost) new 12"/EP released on japaneese label Goon Trax. Goon trax logo is always a good quality assurance for a good hiphop record containing that extra jazzy sound. About the group, I dont know anything about them that's not on their myspace. They are a group from Delaware, USA, but they seem to have their fame in japan.

They have recently released a CD for the japaneese market and this 12" ,japan only of course, contains three tracks from the full length.

I won't lie if I say that the song "Music" is one of the best i've heard this year, the beat is genius, and the song is about loving music, cute! You just have to check out this group in some way, they seems kind of slept on outside Japan. Sad!

TRAINSPOTTERS - FEEL THE VIBE 12" (2007)

Representing Sweden for the first time in this blog. The group is Trainspotters and they're from the very northern parts of our country. Umeå to be more precise. And while they tumble around in the snow with icebears they come up with a warm sound with influences of jazz and soul, and thats what i like! This 12" is released on the japaneese label Chataudisc and contains a remix of original song named "Jetbeat Jazzy mix". Highly Recomended!

Trainspotters is George Kaplan and Rewindable, they're members of the "Random Bastards Crew" containing Snowboarders, Skaters and some other random bastards.

Another faourite with Trainspotters is "Growing up", you can hear it and download it on their myspace.

HIP HOP JAZZ 90'S VOL 2 (2008)

Hip hop, Jazz and 90's, to me i'ts the perfect combination, golden age, beats with a great dynamic sound, soulful loops and concius lyrics. I was way to young in the 90's though so my vinyl addiction had not started to disturb my peaceful life yet. Lucky for me, kind people from France is releasing an update in what was happening back then. This is volume 2 (of 2) but I hope for a third volume soon! I've missed to pick up the first one but it sounds real cool too...

This makes me wanna dig in some dusty crates for some hiphop gold, not so common with crates like thatm in Sweden though..

My favourite songs on the Vol 2 is "Blaque Spurm - Days & Days" and "BSB - How I Live" (remember this was before Back street boys).

SHINSIGHT TRIO - EVERYTHING STEADY GOIN DOWNHILL/ LUCKY DAYZ/ HEART (2007)

Shinsight Trio is the rapper Insight, the producer Shin-Ski and Dj Ryow. Their project shinsight trio is a side project to their many other projects and of course, as almost every new promising project theese days, it's released a japaneese label. This time it's Tokyobased Bad News turn to put their name on the sleeve.

This EP/12" contains at least 2 REAL bangers, so they give you value when you buy this expensive import record. "Everything steady going downhill" is very easy listened, based on a energic jazz loop and Lucky Days is a more laid back track with some more soul! IF somebody know or recognize the original break to Lucky Dayz, I would be happy if you let me know!

SOUND PROVIDERS - AN EVENING WITH THE SOUND PROVIDERS (2004)

Sound Providers!
First of all for those that dont know the Sound Providers is from San Diego, California
and consists of Jay Skillz (Producer) & Soulo (Dj & Producer). Profile (Mc) use to be in the group
but left it and started other projects.

Now about the record.. "An Evening With The Sound Providers".
It's really got that jazzy boom bap sound that you searchin for now a days, really dope!
Even if the record is 65% instrumental it got a nice guest line up: Maspyke, The Procussions,
Asheru, Little Brother And Wee Bee Foolish.

I get a really nice vibe from these cats! They really want to keep that real boom bap sound.
i want to give the record 5 of 5 but they need a Mc! even if they rap on some tracks themselfs.
4 of 5 from me! dont know if this record is sold out now but all hiphop jazz heads better check it if you havent!

SHADES OF BLUE : MADLIB INVADES THE BLUE NOTE (2003)

This is no news! I just found this records in my crates when i was looking for some good jazzy stuff to mix. I'd forgot it actually. So I played it and found out once again that it's a fucking good record by madlib! I bought it in Manchester some years ago when madlib had released the "Shades of blue, madlib invades the blue note LP", probably i was out of money but wanted a taste of it anyway so i bought the sampler instead. Something I hardly ever do if a record is available on full lenght wax, especially not back then.

Nuff said! It's a cool sampler where Madlib uses some old blue note tunes by Donald Byrd, Ronnie Foster and Bobbi Humphrey to create a real jazzy sound! Medaphoar is also appearing on one track and thats kind of nice too.

I got this 7" for free with a previous order on HHV.DE. The record is limited to 1000 copies, but isn't that pretty much for a vinyl record in theese days?

However, it contains two fresh songs thats not relased on any 12" or LP before so this is vinyl only, and they're kind of dope! Thats why I put them here. I also like the fact that they squeeze in two tracks on each side on the record.
For you who havent heard the full length LP "ZION I & THE GROUCH - HEROES IN THE CITY OF DOPE"
